I am very excited to announce that I will be helping Rosie Sykes and Jill Brownjohn to run a workshop on Horst Schulz‘s Patchwork Knitting Techniques in October. So the salient details:
When?
Saturday 4th October 2008, 9.30 – 5.00
Where?
Liston Hall, Marlow, Buckinghamshire, UK.
How much does it cost?
£35
What will I learn?
Rosie and Jill will cover the basics of mitred squares and joining them together, knitting strips and different joining methods, chevrons, shells, and combining these techniques with machine knitting. I will cover shaping within mitred squares, the methods I used when making my Patchwork Sweater. We we also all be talking about design ideas for what you can do with all these techniques.
How do I find out more / book my place?
Contact Jill Brownjohn for more information and a booking form at telephone 01628 471397. Unfortunately Jill’s email isn’t working at the moment, but you can email me for the booking form at heather@heatherknits.com.
Hope to see you there!
Greetings from Istanbul! I just discovered Horst Schulz while browsing projects on Ravelry. A woman in South Africa created, what I believe to be a work of art, from a pattern published in a South African crafts magazine by Horst Schulz. Here’s a link to a pic of her quilt posted to Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/30412618@N06/2848083108
So now I am absolutely obsessed with finding the pattern. I love this quilt!! I’ve scoured the net for information with little luck. I’ve emailed the magazine and not reply. Do you possibly know how I can find/get/buy a copy of the pattern? Do you know how to contact Mr. Schulz? Would you be willing to forward my request to him? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.
Sincerely,
Rick Fahrenbruch
I have done patdchwork kniting for several years, and love it. I am addicted to it after reading Horst’s first book!
May I bae so bold as to ask a question re technique that I cannot find well explained. It is the half triangele to fill in at bottom, top or sides of work. In my case it is an afghan with squares sitting on their points, and I wish to fill them in. There are two descriptions in my book, only one makes sense to me. Help please,
Hi Barbara,
I’m afraid I had trouble emailing you so hope you will find this comment!
It is lovely to hear from you I hope I can help. I’m afraid I have only
worked one kind of half-diamond so far, so I hope that my experience might
be useful.
I worked the triangle as follows:
Pick up stitches as usual down the edge of one diamond, and up the edge of
the one next to it. Work your central decreases as you would normally for
the diamond shape (that is do a double decrease on every wrong-side row),
but at the same time decrease at the edges. I do the edge decrease by
instead of doing the normal knit into the back of the first stitch, I knit
two together through the back of the stitch at the beginning of each row. So
with each row you are decreasing one stitch at the edge. This also means you
maintain your nice chain up the side of the triangle which can be useful if
you want to pick up stitches along that edge later. You carry on like this
til you run out of stitches. What you get looks like half a diamond shape
(with the top chopped off). It can sometimes make a slightly pointy bit in
the middle but this can usually be solved by whatever edging you have, or by
pushing it into shape when you wash it before it dries.
Hope this is useful, and answers your question. If not let me know and I
will try again!
Rick,
Are you by any chance the Rick from Lincoln, Nebraska of the same name? If not I am sorry to waste your time. Sincerely. John
